Tom Bant has been drawing since his mother found that a pencil and some paper kept him quiet in church. His drawing ability resulted in success in art classes, and lead him to major in art in college. At Mount San Antonio College, in Pomona, Tom found Graphic Design, which he pursued further at the California State University of Long Beach.
From college Tom went on to a 30-year career in Graphic Design, working for ad agencies, magazines and eventually owning and operating his own design firm. Throughout these years Tom always took opportunity to do cartooning professionally. He has illustrated for many advertisements, illustrated children's books and done caricatures.
Tom came to a point in his career that was more of business than of art, and realized he needed more art. With all his children grown and out of the home he decided to go back to school and get his teaching credential. Tom is currently searching for a position as a High School Art teacher, and in the mean time he is supporting himself doing caricatures. He works at festivals, fairs, and private events, and also does commissioned caricatures.
Tom Bant has been doing caricatures professionally for 30 years. He is self-taught, developing his style based on a technique called gesture drawing that he learned in college. His professional role models are Mort Drucker and Jack Davis, both of Mad magazine fame. Tom and his wife Carol live in Wrightwood, a mountain community in California.
